Job description Apple is looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer to be part of a new group within Apples world class Product Design Group called Core Design. Core Design is tasked with investigating and developing new technologies, driving innovation into our technology suppliers and validating performance before it is integrated into our products. The position is a key member of the technical staff that will be heavily involved in the design and delivery of the custom components that go into all Apple Mac Products. The group is involved in all Mac products from early concept generation through product end of life. The initial focus of the Core Design will be on custom interconnect, fans and battery enclosures. The scope of the group will evolve over time as the group matures.
The right individual will likely have many years of product design and manufacturing experience and will have shipped multiple products in a lead or principle engineer role. The person will have wide technical breadth as well as technical depth in at least a few key areas listed below. We are looking for someone who is passionate about engineering and thrives on innovation. The person should be excited to push the envelope on what is possible. We are looking for someone who has a broad range of experience that can be applied to a wide range of problems, but that also has the technical capability to be able to dive deep into a problem with a group of experts.
The role will require the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously with demanding schedule requirements across a large cross functional team. A proven ability to deliver solid design solutions while balancing multiple priorities is key. Experience closely working with suppliers is important as well. The engineer in this role will be very comfortable with applying scientific method and have be able to apply or create the process through which they can solve complex problems.

Requirements:
BSME with a minimum of 5 years experience.
A deep understanding of common manufacturing processes
Plastic Injection Molding ( single/multiple shot, over/insert molding, etc )
Sheetmetal (progressive die, forming, fine-blanking, etc )
Extrusion ( plastic, metal, etc )
Die Casting ( Aluminum, Magnesium, etc )
Machining
Familiarity With many of the following areas and deep knowledge in at least 3 of them ( in no particular order ):
Design of Thermal systems
Fan Design
Connector Design
Cables
PCB design and manufacturing principles
Materials ( Polymers, Elastomers, Ceramics, Glass, Metals, Meta-Materials, Nano-Materials, other exotics )
EMC
Signal Integrity
Electro-Optics
Magnetics
Mechanisms
Batteries
Displays
High volume manufacturing
Fixture design
GD&T
Other significant engineering area
Extensive 3D CAD Experience in UG, ProE, Unigraphics or Solidworks.
Willingness to learn UG.
Preferred:
Extensive consumer product development experience.
Extensive worldwide, high volume manufacturing experience
MS or PhD in engineering or physics
Cross functional management experience.
Lead engineer experience
R&D experience
