The Engineering Technician II performs assignments that are not completely standardized or prescribed, selects or adapts standard procedures or equipment, using fully applicable precedents, receives initial instructions, equipment requirements, and advice from supervisor or engineer as needed. Performs recurring work independently. Work is reviewed for technical adequacy or conformity with instructions.
Typical duties include:
Constructing components, subunits, or simple models or adapting standard equipment; may troubleshoot and correct malfunctions
Following specific layout and scientific diagrams to construct and package simple devices and subunits of equipment
Conducting various tests or experiments which may require minor modifications in test setups or procedures as well as subjective judgments in measurement; selecting, preparing, and operating standard test equipment and recording test data
Extracting and compiling a variety of engineering data from field notes, manuals, lab reports, etc.; processing data, identifying errors or inconsistencies, and selecting methods of data presentation
Assisting in design modification by compiling data related to design, specifications, and materials that are pertinent to specific items of equipment or component parts; developing information concerning previous operational failures and modifications and using judgment and initiative to recognize inconsistencies or gaps in data and seeking sources to clarify information

Will modify, fabricate, and build electronic equipment assemblies utilizing layout diagrams, wire prints, and verbal instructions. Install cable and wire various types of cable assemblies. Mount equipment in cases, cabinets, vehicles, or onboard US Navy ships.

This position is located in Chesapeake, VA. There is no relocation assistance available for this position. Applicants must be currently residing in or state willingness to relocate self to Chesapeake, VA or surrounding areas.

Must have:
High school diploma and at least 4 years related experience
Ability to lift and carry 50 lb.
Ability to work in shipyard environments
Knowledge of hand tools, power hand tools, and how to use them safely
Ability to read and interpret installation drawings and run sheets
Ability to obtain a security clearance
Valid driver's license
Cable fabrication experience

Preferences:
NAVSEA cable certification
Fiber optic connector qualification
US Navy communications experience
US Navy shipboard experience
US Navy ET comm equipment "C" school
Computer keyboard skills in the areas of word processing and spreadsheets
